Digitalis purpurea
Biennial. Towers in its second summer — bees disappear inside it entirely.
Field note: let one spire self-sow and it will never leave you. This is a feature.
Tropaeolum majus
The whole plant is edible and slightly indignant about it. Peppery, generous, unstoppable.
Field note: rich soil gives you leaves the size of saucers and no flowers. Starve it kindly.
Borago officinalis
Star-blue flowers that taste of cucumber. Self-sows with tremendous confidence.
Field note: plant once, own forever. The bees will hold you to it.
Nigella damascena
Blooms inside a haze of green thread, then leaves you the handsomest seed pods in the trade.
Field note: leave the pods standing. They rattle in October like tiny paper lanterns.
The growth calendar
Nothing in a garden happens in a line. We plan on a wheel: sow into the pale months, harvest against the dark ones, and let the hand sweep at its own unhurried speed. It is pointing at now.
